What a sick day looks like in Africa

We kept Charlie home from playschool yesterday, after she was sent home on Wednesday with a snotty nose and bad cough. Although it’s the same cold she’s had for the past three weeks, it seems to be getting worse as the weather cools, and as South African children never wear shoes and socks, it’s impossible to make sure she’s warm enough.

After spending most of the day inside snoozing, playing and watching movies, I decided we needed to go for a walk. The sunshine would be good for all of us, and I was beginning to feel cooped up.

“If we go to the beach, how will we keep Charlie out of the water?” Josh asked.

The answer is, we couldn’t. Fortunately, I packed a change of clothes and the sun was shining and hot.

Man, I’m going to miss this place.

This is outside our complex. It's a two-minute walk to the beach.

From the road, you cross the train tracks and then scramble up some sand dunes. This river flows from the Silvermine Wetlands across the road (I'll post about it sometime soon!)

Papa helped his munchkin down the dunes and onto the beach, where she immediately started playing in the sand.

Some sea birds playing in the water. Josh thinks they're petrels but we're not 100% sure.

Despite our best efforts to walk along the beach, Charlie pulled me toward the surf.

...and proceeded to get very wet.

Who can blame her?
But then, who can blame her?
